As Geography and Politics graduate, I have a particular interest in areas such as: social and spatial processes, medical humanities, health geography and disability studies.
Combined with my digital arts practice, this background has led to my involvement in a number of geopolitical and technological arts-research programmes. Recent projects include:
- New Spaces – Co-Investigator on Strand 1 of the New Spaces project, ‘Queer and Disability Arts’. New Spaces is a continuation of the Around the Toilet research project exploring the toilet as a place of exclusion and belonging. Academic researchers on the project are based across four Universities: Sheffield Hallam University, University of Sheffield, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Leeds.
- Box Society – Full Circle Arts and Playfuel collaborative street game project bringing together theatre performance and urban geography.
- DMLab North – Drake Music funded space for disabled musicians, makers and coders to work together to develop musical instruments, interfaces and tools that allow for expression, precision, dynamics and reliability.
- D2ART – AHRC funded collaborative project (led by the University of Birmingham) exploring the potential of new innovative digital tools to support and extend the practice of physically disabled visual artists.
“Over the past year Gemma worked with the Around the Toilet team as an access consultant, disabled parent and artist. I am delighted that she has offered her expertise in creating soundscapes to help us continue this project into 2016.”
